Birmingham’s Samford University will host the nation’s leading scorer on Saturday.

Birmingham, Ala., will have a celebrity in town on Saturday. The Wildcats of Davidson College travel to the Magic City to play Southern Conference foe, Samford University. Davidson junior guard, Stephen Curry, leads all scorers in college basketball, averaging 29.3 points per contest.

Stephen Curry and Davidson

Although he had an outstanding freshman season, Curry sealed national fame in last year’s NCAA Tourney as a sophomore when he blazed opponents for 32 ppg in the tournament, leading his team to an Elite Eight appearance before the Wildcats were knocked off by eventual champion Kansas. In that 59-57 loss, Curry actually passed on a possible game-winning shot when he dished the ball to teammate Jason Richardson, who missed a prayer as the final seconds melted off the clock.

Curry is the nation's most explosive player in the clutch. Shown here celebrating a tournament win against Gonzaga last season - he burned the nets with 30 points in the second half of that game.

Can’t blame him, though, as he unsurprisingly attracted a tough double team situation and had no feasible shot at the buzzer-beater. The loss would break Davidson’s 25 game winning streak, the country’s longest at the time.

Curry not only leads the nation in scoring, piling up 39 or more points in five different games this season, he is also in the top-10 for steals and assists. He is the son of former NBA star and current Charlotte Bobcats assistant, Dell Curry.

The Samford Bulldogs, coached by Jimmy Tillette, lost to The Citadel, 70-45, on Monday and plays Georgia Southern Thursday night beforing facing the Wildcats on Saturday. Davidson, coached by Bob McKillop, defeated Wofford, 79-56 last Saturday and plays UT-Chattanooga Wednesday night before taking on the Bulldogs.
